Tea's classic style even scored her a page in A Privileged Life. So today, we celebrate Tea Leoni as the Preppy Icon of the Day.

Preppy Icon of the Day

After having a bit of a movie marathon last night (I returned home completely exhausted from my trip and was fairly incapable of doing anything else), I realized I had yet to use perennial preppy favorite Rob Lowe as a Preppy Icon of the Day. So I now present to you, Rob Lowe as Preppy Icon of the Day.

Rob has done tv and movies, funny and serious, wacky and straightlaced, but ever true to his preppy roots, he always ends up back in a polo.

From his days as a prep school prettyboy in Class and Oxford Blues, to his most recent adventures in politics in The West Wing and Brothers and Sisters, Rob Lowe has certainly inspired his share of viewers to toss on a tie and oxford.

So here's to Rob Lowe, today's Preppy Icon of the Day.

Preppy (and Green!) Icon of the Day

Today's Preppy Icon of the Day is Kelly Rutherford.

In addition to being preppy, Kelly, who stars on the CW's Gossip Girl, is also uber green. In fact, she's on the current cover of Positively Green magazine.

Robert Redford oozes cool. He's an icon for the guys and a heartthrob for the ladies. Mr. Redford gets the honor of being today's Preppy Icon of the Day for his ability to seamlessly combine preppy, cowboy and cool. He also gets major points for being uber-green. His Sundance brand is one of the greenest around.

Preppy Icon(s) of the Day

Today's Preppy Icon of the Day is a pair of icons. The Keno brothers, Leslie and Leigh, are known for their expertise in antiques.

You may have seen them on Antiques Roadshow or on the cover of their book Hidden Treasures: Searching for Masterpieces of American Furniture. Leigh opened his own antique dealership in New York City in 1986 and Leslie heads the American furniture and decorative arts division at Sotheby's. Both were awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2005. Leigh is a graduate of Hamilton College and Leslie is a graduate of Williams College.

Because of their love of antiques as well as their affinity for critter pattern and repp ties, as well as pastel oxford button downs, the Keno brothers are today's Preppy Icon(s) of the Day.

Preppy Icon of the Day

Today's preppy icon is a bit of a preppy-rebel, if you will. In an industry dominated by western wear and vintage thirts, Tim McGraw bucks the trend in argyle and tweed.


If you're not a country music fan and haven't heard of Tim McGraw, he is the husband of fellow country singer Faith Hill and the son of baseball great Tug McGraw.


Earlier this month, Tim appeared on the Rachel Ray show wearing a deep purple v-neck sweater and pale grey button up shirt. See the interview here.

Notably Preppy

The Olympics were months ago, but I just came across these pictures of the US Olympic team at the opening ceremonies.



I love the fact that their attire celebrates the American fashion heritage (designed by RL, of course) in the style of the 20s and 30s, a la Jay Gatsby and company. Well done, Godfather of Prep.

Preppy Icon of the Day

Today, we celebrate photographer Richard Avedon as the Preppy Icon of the Day.

Avedon's photographic subjects spanned the gamut...fashion icons, politicians, musicians, actors, world leaders. In his career, Avedon captured some of the most amazing images ever viewed (in my opinion).

His personal style was, however, significantly more scaled down than many of his subjects. Preferring a button down shirt or polo and jeans to anything fancy, Avedon was "artistic prep" from his youth in New York City through his death on assignment in Texas.

Mr. Avedon, we salute your preppiness!

The latest Preppy Icon of the Day is the adorable Reese Witherspoon. Reese's offscreen style is a cool classic preppy that so many of us aspire to achieve.

She does a fantastic job of pairing basics and making casual look cute.

Today's Preppy Icon of the Day is Alex P. Keaton as played by Michael J. Fox on the series Family Ties. Alex was about as preppy as they come.

The character even makes an appearance in LikeTotally80s.com's blurb on "The Preppy Look", being cited as a great example of 80s prep.

Preppy Icon of the Day

I've been thinking a lot about the preppy icons that inspire me and I've decided to post a "Preppy Icon of the Day" every time I think about it. The first Preppy Icon of the Day is the classically elegant Audrey Hepburn. Audrey's casual style of a button down shirt paired with capri pants and ballet flats is as current today as it was in her day.

If you've not seen Roman Holiday, Funny Face or Paris When it Sizzles, run out and rent them now! These three films are among Audrey's greatest work.


Though she was fabulous in every role she played, Audrey's most meaningful work was not onscreen. Her heart was as big as her talent and she was appointed as a UNICEF Ambassador in 1989, a post she held until her death in 1993.

From UNICEF's website:

"I can testify to what UNICEF means to children, because I was among those who received food and medical relief right after World War II," said actress Audrey Hepburn on her appointment as a Goodwill Ambassador in 1989. "I have a long-lasting gratitude and trust for what UNICEF does." As a result of her work for UNICEF over subsequent years, that gratitude is mutual.

So today, we celebrate Audrey Hepburn as both a preppy icon and an inspiring humanitarian.
